CELEBRATING 50 YEARS WITH EVELYN MORRISSEY & JANIS MITCHELL
Submitted By Chrissy Moutsatsos on Thursday, October 25, 2018
Evelyn Morrissey began playing ringette in Ajax in 1968 (white jersey).

Janis Mitchell began playing ringette in Ajax in 1971 (red jersey).

Both Evelyn and Janis learned the game of ringette from Ruth Bennett.  Ruth brought the rules of the game to Ajax and Pickering in the late 60's, because a few women and girls wanted to play a sport on the ice that wasn't hockey. All three women played together in those early years and quickly grew to love the game.

The Ajax Pickering Ringette Association was honoured to recently meet with these two fascinating women and hear their stories about the early days of ringette in Ajax.

Evelyn and Janis said they immediately liked the sport because they didn't have to wear a lot of hockey equipment...just a mask, a stick and a pair of skates (some even wore figure skates). They liked the concept of being forced to pass over the two blue lines.  They liked that the sport of ringette was invented to have no contact, so there wasn't a chance of getting hurt.

Evelyn Morrissey and Janis Mitchell will be honoured guests at the upcoming 2018 Pickering Ringette Tournament, from November 29 - December 2, to celebrate the APRA's 50th Anniversary!!
