NOTICE TO ALL APRA MEMBERS - PLEASE READ PRIOR TO REGISTRATION

RE: CONCUSSION SAFETY AND EDUCATION


Please be informed of the new policy from the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Sport regarding ROWAN'S LAW. The final regulation is currently available for print or download at RINGETTE ONTARIO, as well as www.Ontario.ca/concussions.
 
As a high-level overview:

As of July 1st, 2019, Ringette Ontario associations/teams must not register athletes under the age of 26 years of age (**with the exception of University/College/Post-Secondary) in Ringette activities unless they receive confirmation from the athlete and their parents/guardian (if under 18 years of age) that they have reviewed the Minister approved Concussion Awareness Resources within the previous 12-months. 

Between July 1st, but no later than August 30th, 2019, Ringette Ontario associations/teams must not permit individuals to serve as coaches, officials and team trainers in Ringette activities that includes any athlete under 26 years of age**, unless the individual gives Ringette Ontario association/teams confirmation in the calendar year, but before the first time they serve in that position in the year, that they have reviewed the Minister approved Concussion Awareness Resources within 12 months before the confirmation is given.

This law also requires all registered players under the age of 26 (including parents for players under the age of 18), as well as all coaches, trainers and officials to sign their designated sports Concussion Code of Conduct.

STEP 1 - PRIOR TO REGISTRATION

 

IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE NEW ROWAN'S LAW, PRIOR TO REGISTERING FOR THE 2019/20 SEASON...

ALL players under the age of 26 
ALL parents of players under the age of 18  
ALL registered bench staff of teams with players under the age of 26
ALL On-Ice Assistants supporting U19 and younger teams

... MUST FIRST REVIEW THE MINISTER APPROVED CONCUSSION AWARENESS RESOURCES. AGE-APPROPRIATE DOCUMENTS CAN BE FOUND HERE:

NOTE:
YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO PROVIDE ACKNOWLEDGEMENT DURING THE REGISTRATION PROCESS THAT YOU HAVE REVIEWED THE CONCUSSION AWARENESS MATERIALS. REGISTRATION FOR PLAYERS AND BENCH STAFF WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED WITHOUT THIS ACKNOWLEDGEMENT.




STEP 2 - PRIOR TO STEPPING ON THE ICE*


In accordance with the new law, RINGETTE ONTARIO has established a Concussion Policy and Concussion Code of Conduct (for Athletes, and Bench Staff), that satisfies the requirements set out in the regulations. The policy and codes of conduct addresses Responsibilities, Concussion Management Guidelines, Removal-From-Sport & Return-to-Play Guidelines and a Summary of Reporting Obligations. 

PRIOR TO STEPPING ON THE ICE FOR THE 2019/20 SEASON... 

ALL players under the age of 26 
ALL parents of players under the age of 18  
ALL registered bench staff of teams with players under the age of 26

NOTE: PLAYERS AND BENCH STAFF WILL NOT BE ALLOWED ON THE ICE OR ON A BENCH WITHOUT SUBMITTING A SIGNED CONCUSSION CODE OF CONDUCT


HOW DO I SUBMIT MY SIGNED CONCUSSION CODE OF CONDUCT?

For Regional and Provincial players (Youth and Adult), submit copies of your signed code of conduct to your team manager. 
For those enrolled in Youth House League, please submit to the House League Coordinator
For those enrolled in Adult House League, please submit to the APRA Registrar.

These documents will be retained by the APRA Registrar.
